The problem it answers
- No shared picture of a facility
- Status trapped in separate systems
- Planning done on outdated drawings
How this category works
A digital twin is a representation that updates with the thing it stands for. A 2D schematic is enough for some operations. A 3D model earns its cost when space, assets, and people need to see the same building or plant. Visualization without a data feed is a picture. We label it that way.
1. Pick the fidelity
Schematic, architectural, or a data-linked twin. The question decides the model.
2. Assemble the source
BIM, CAD, surveys, and the live systems that should update the view.
3. Make it operable
Someone must be able to find an asset, a room, or a fault without a specialist beside them.
4. Connect the stream
IoT, maintenance, and analytics keep the twin from becoming last year’s render.
Questions
- What is a digital twin?
- A virtual stand-in for a physical asset or place, updated with data so it can be used to monitor and decide, not only to present.
- Do we need 3D?
- Not always. A clear 2D twin is the right tool when the job is status and navigation, not spatial fidelity.
